This is a nice, original printing of White Jacket; or the World in A Man-of-War by Herman Melville. First American Edition published by Harper Brothers, New York (1850). Original black cloth spine rebacked again in cloth, original end papers retained. In the earliest binding with publisher's name and city stamped on covers and with yellow glazed endpapers which are ink stained over center of the surface in front and rear.   

Measures 5.5" x 8" and contains 465 pages. Six pages of terminal advertisements.

There is some mild rubbing wear to edges of covers. Interior pages foxed throughout, text sharp and clean. Small ink stain on upper-right corner for first several pages  A book dealer has written a summary of first edition points in light pencil on blank endpaper added during binding process.
