The designs for the Christmas stamps for 1981 were taken from drawings by children aged between 5 and 16. A competition was arranged by the BBC TV programme Blue Peter in January, More than 4,000 children entered in three age groups, sending pictures of many topics connected with Christmas. Two winners were selected from each group to give one design for each of five stamps and one for the Post Office first day cover. The winners received prizes from the Post Office and appeared on the Blue Peter programme. They were also present when their designs went into production. A travelling exhibition of the top 50 runner-up entries was mounted by the Post office.

The picture of Father Christmas used on the 11 1/2 p stamp was painted by Samantha Brown, aged 5, of Rhoose, Glamorgan.

The beautiful mosaic head of Christ used on the 14p stamp was painted by Tracy Jenkins, aged 14, of Luton.

The flying angel design for the 18p stamp was painted by Lucinda Blackmore, aged 6, of Avon.

The water colour of Mary and Joseph used on the 22p stamp was painted by Stephen Moore, aged 16, of West Sussex.

The 25p stamp depicts the three wise men as painted by Sophie Sharp, aged 8, of Preston.
