Kakadu Plum

(Terminalia ferdindiana)

Terminalia ferdinandiana, also called the Kakadu plum is a flowering plant

native to Australia, widespread throughout northwestern Australia

to eastern Arnhem Land.

It has very high concentrations of vitamin C in its fruit, around 1000mg of Vitamin C

per 100 grams of dried fruit, compared to around 45mg of Vitamin C in oranges; and

ranks among the highest known of any natural source.

A monsoonal plant, really only best suited to inland Australia or Northern Territory.

Flowers and bush tucker

Highly decorative, creamy white perfumed flowers.

An asset to any garden, it produces roundish, light green fruits, which are usually eaten raw, although they can also be made into a jam or dried.

What will I receive?

You will receive one (1) very large seed.

Terminalia ferdinandiana seeds have a physical dormancy and will need to be

nicked or sanded or filed to encourage germination.

The seed is surrounded by a dry flesh that can be sanded off.

You can soak the dry fruit in water and then simply rub the flesh off.

Inside the seed is a much smaller ‘nut’, about the size and length of an almond sliver

which is the actual part of the seed.

To encourage germination, you need to just expose this inner nut by filing

the shell with a rasp or file.

With zero treatment, you can expect to wait a few months and up to two years or

more until the embryo can absorb enough water to start the germination process.

Native seeds often respond well to smoke treatment, which also acts as a natural

fungicide.
