Very Good in pink pictorial cloth-backed boards with black stylized letters stamped to cover and spine. 12 1/4" x 9 1/4". Some corner and edge wear, some bumps and rubbing, pages slightly age-toned, otherwise clean, tightly bound and unmarked. Very Good original beige pictorial dustjacket clean and intact overall but with some toning and chipping at the corners, head and tail of the spine, not price clipped, protected by a paper-backed Gaylord sleeve. Replete with 230 black-and-white illustrations including paintings, etchings, drawings and engravings from Viennese artists of the time. The text is organized by year, and uses excerpts from first-hand accounts, which acts as an intimate history of Vienna from 1438 (Die Schilderung des Aenas Sylvius) through societal events, architectural changes, fashion, art, the rise and fall of leaders, conflicts, daily life and concluding with a folk song from 1799 (Kein Alter ist von Liebe frei) and a survey of the home furnishings of the transitional period (Ubergangsperiode), around 1800. 216 pp. including 72 pp. of text and 144 pp. of illustrations, a List of Text Pieces, and a List of Illustrations.
