Moissanite
is one of the hardest gemstones on earth, and in the gemstone world, second
only to diamonds in durability. It is much harder than stones such as
sapphires, emeralds or rubies and an excellent option for daily wear.
Moissanite
is naturally occurring silicon carbide and its various crystalline polymorphs.
It has the chemical formula SiC and is a rare mineral, discovered by French
chemist Herni Moissan in 1893. He discovered the Mineral Moissanite while
examining rock samples from a meteor crater located in Canyon Diablo, Arizona.
At first, he mistakenly identified the crystals as diamonds, but in 1904 he
identified the crystals as silicon carbide. Silicon carbide is useful for
commercial and industrial applications due to its hardness, optical properties
and thermal conductivity. Moissanite, in its natural form, remains very rare.
It has been discovered only in a few rocks, from upper mantle rock to
meteorites.
