DESCRIPTION:

Please note:  We might not be able to ship this bulb to overseas locations because of it's large size.  If we do ship, there will probably be an additional postage charge to cover the exact cost of the shipment.

Pedunculatum is an impressive, focal point, landscape plant.    We are probably the only nursery that has these for sale in the United States, and we only have them available every few years when we dig out the clump and remove and cut apart the large, offset bulbs.    This is only the second time we have offered bulbs, so, if you are interested, order soon as they will sell out.   During the summer growing season, this makes one of the most attractive plants in the garden with tall, erect leaves reaching 4-5' tall and large flower umbels that can reach 12-18" in diameter.   Unlike most crinum that form small bulbs (offsets) at the base of the bulb from the basal plate, pedunculatum primarily multiplies when the large bulbs vertically split into two to four new large bulbs. This process is called vertical fission and is common in the greater asiaticum family of crinum.     It will also occasionally form a small offset bulb and is fertile and able to produce seeds.   We have successfully used it as a seed parent and as a pollen parent in several successful crosses, although it is a bit selective about which other pollens it will accept.

This is another one of the most beautiful bulbs in our collection of about 1000 crinum varieties including about 350 of our own hybrids.  If you are looking for large, plants for your landscape and live anywhere with a temperate climate, especially along the Gulf or Southeast Atlantic coast, this is a great choice.  Bulbs can grow to the size of a large man's arm.  It can survive even in zone 7.   A large bulb, in just a few years, can easily multiply to 15-20 bulbs and cover the area of a medium size dining table.  We have had as many as 36 buds on a single, strong, 48" tall scape.

These bulbs can live for decades, and this particular bulb will be a prize in your collection in a few years.

BACKGROUND:

This is also known as the Mangrove Lily in some areas.  It was originally a swampy-ground type of crinum considered closely allied to Crinum Asiaticum, but lately recognized as closer to Crinum Defixum.   It is native to Queensland, Australia and the adjacent Pacific Islands.  Foliage is often 4 ft. in length in most areas, and bulb is urn-shaped with columnar sheathing about the foliage. In more tropical areas, the bulb becomes a mere growing crown on an elevated basal root stump about 12 to 20 inches high, therefore the name pedunculatum. (This behavior is also seen in the Asiaticum.)  Another identification trait is the very blunt, broad tip of the primary foliage from seeding plants, as opposed to the Asiaticum which is very acute.  Pendunculatum clumps-up very nicely to make a wonderful accent plant.  Each year it just gets better and now that it has produced about 16 new bulbs, we have some to offer!

GROWING CONDITIONS:

This bulb will thrive in full sun and needs good draining soil.  Here in northeast FL, zone 9,  it starts blooming in early May and continues until about mid summer.  The leaves stay green all year. It is very hardy and easy to grow requiring no special care.  It will tolerate extended dry periods and will take freezing temperatures at least down to the high teens.  Crinum bulbs will survive very long periods out of the ground if left to dry properly.  This would make an excellent container plant in colder climates.  C. pendunculatum is more tolerant of cool weather than the Asiaticum and recommended to Zone 7.  Prefers full sun to filtered shade.

DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID:

You are bidding on a JUMBO, blooming-size bulb at least 6 years old and about 3-4" in diameter which should bloom next year.  It should transplant easily.  This is a very exclusive and choice crinum.    These bulbs are very heavy and can weigh from several pounds for a medium size to as much as 8 pounds, or more for a Jumbo size, which greatly increases the shipping costs.  In order to separate them, because they grow fused at the base, we must CUT them apart.   Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves which might be trimmed off (they will quickly regrow).  In the winter months the leaves may be absent.

WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom.

Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old)

Large bulb - should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size)

Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old)

Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset)

Seedling bulb - started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated)
