A nice little book describing and analysing the DAF passenger cars. Although primarily known for their commercial vehicles, DAF produced cars for some 15 years and these stood out for their innovative features such as the absence of greasing points (a first) and, particularly, the novel Variomatic automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT) by rubber belts. This feature also made them surprisingly competent in motorsport, which is also covered. This compact A5, 30 page book also sets all this into the context of Dutch car making over the years with mentions of Spyker, Donkervoort and others, while also covering the period after DAF sold its car division to Volvo and how some of the basic designs and production methods continued into the Dutch Volvos 340, 360, 440, 460, 480, S40, V40 and other products of the NedCar plant, including the Smart ForFour and BMW's MINI. In addition, the further development of the CVT is discussed. This little book is richly illustrated in both colour and black and white. There is certainly enough here to hold one's own in a pub conversation, but even the diehard DAF enthusiast may find something of interest here. By the way, can be signed by the author on request.
