This sale is for an 1857 Flying Eagle Cent #2, which I believe to be in Overall Very Good condition. This 1^st U.S. Small Cent, has a Bold Outline, Date and Legend (Lettering). It has moderate wear on both the front and back. It has a Nice Copper Nickel Tone and makes a Nice Example of the nation's only Eagle Penny. This Ultra Low 17.5 Million Mintage Flying Eagle Penny is 150+ years old, and was a Hoarded Coin even in its day. This Copper-Nickel One Cent Piece is a Deed of Historic Real Estate, and an Appreciating Asset. The collectible rare coin pictured is the coin you will receive.

The Flying Eagle Penny was the First U.S. Small Cent, and was issued by Congress in 1856. The original (2000) prototypes that were made in 1856 were sold directly to collectors, so the new coin actually made its debut to the nation in 1857. The 1856 is an Ultra Rare Date. The U.S. Mint set up booths on their front lawn in Philadelphia to sell the new Penny directly to the public. Scalpers re-sold the same coins for a premium, to people who didn’t want to wait in the lines! They were a Hoarded Coin right from the start. Congress had not foreseen the collect-ability of these new coins, which caused major commerce shortages, that they were actually issued to fix! The Flying Eagle Cent only saw two years of commercial issue, in 1857 and 1858, before James Longacre switched the design to the Indian Head in 1859- the same year that Abe Lincoln ran for President. In 1861, the Civil War broke out, making Copper & Nickel (and The Flying Eagle Cent) even more scarce. These Copper-Nickel Flying Eagle Cents, are a Rare, Preserved Piece of U.S. History!

The Official ANA Grading Standards Book (Whitman) describes the Very Good Grade as: “OBVERSE: Outline of feathers in right wing ends show, but some are smooth. Legend and date are visible. The eye shows clearly. REVERSE: Slight detail in wreath shows, but the top is worn smooth. Very little outline shows in the bow.” *Please do grade for yourself using the pictures.
