Commissioned by John Cobb, the Napier-Railton is an aero-engined racing car designed by Reid Railton and built in 1933 by Thomson & Taylor Ltd. of Brooklands. With a ladder chassis and single-seater polished aluminium body, this 2-ton machine is powered by a modified 12 cylinder naturally aspirated Napier Lion internal combustion engine driving through a crash gearbox to an underslung ENV rear axle and rear suspension featuring twin semi-elliptical leaf springs. The 12 cylinders are positioned in three banks of four, requiring an elaborate triple exhaust system. On 7th October 1935 Cobb took the Brooklands all-time lap record that will last forever at 143.44 mph (230.84 km/h) as this record wasn’t broken before the tracks closure.Between 1933 and 1937 the Napier-Railton broke 47 World speed records at Brooklands and Montlhéry, France, then in both 1935 and 1936 it took the World 24 Hour Record at Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA. Purchased by Brooklands Museum in 1997 and maintained in fully working order it is run regularly and proudly displayed in the Museum's 1930’s motoring shed.
