The sharp lines and new chassis of the TR4 were well received in 1961 by all but the USA who continued to buy the previous model. The TR4A was an evolution of the TR4 with a 2138 cc, 4-cylinder engine giving 104 bhp. Built between 1965 and 1968, it was hoped the new but more complex independent rear suspension, using coil springs and semi-trailing wishbones would address the desire for more comfortable riding sports cars, but in response to dealer requests about a quarter of TR4A's were produced with a solid rear axle option, similar to the earlier TR4. The TR4A was the first vehicle to offer an option for axle type. The new suspension eventually proved itself with customers and in competition, with three TR4A IRS models posting a team win and finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in class at the 1966 Sebring 12-hour race. The IRS model carries a distinctive globe bonnet badge and special boot badge. In 1965 the TR4A IRS sold in the UK for £970.
