Based on the Focus ST, several changes were made to achieve 300+ bhp and 325lb/ft of torque. The Volvo-engineered 2,522cc 5-cylinder 20-valve turbocharged engine received unique camshafts, revised cylinder head, new intake and exhaust manifolds plus a new turbocharger and intercooler, all combining to provide a 0-60 mph time of 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 163 mph. To save weight Ford opted for the same front wheel drive layout of the ST, but all this extra power needed to be transferred to the road. The solution was a Quaife Torque Biasing limited-slip differential along with an innovative front suspension system known as a RevoKnuckle. These elements allowed Ford to balance traction, handling and performance. Other improvements include a wider track, stronger driveshafts, revised springs and dampers, thicker rear anti-roll bar, and a special version of Ford’s ESP system designed to allow a very sporty driving style before activating. The Focus RS also boasts uprated brakes, with 336mm single pot front and 300mm rear discs. An aggressive bodykit is also fitted, including new front bumper, twin-element black roof spoiler and a purposeful-looking rear bumper incorporating a large venturi tunnel. Widened front and rear quarter panels incorporate wider wheel arches accommodating 19-inch alloys. Other notable features include the two 80’s RS style bonnet louvres. Proving popular with sporting enthusiasts, the Focus RS maintained Ford's strong podium presence in international rallying with the WRC version until rule changes in 2011.
