After visiting Living National Treasure Shōji Hamada in Mashiko,
he returned to Germany for a while.
After a year and a half of pottery training in Germany,
he went to St. Ives in England to visit Bernard Leach,
who introduced him to Tatsuzo Shimaoka, who later became a living national treasure.
At the age of 26, he became the first foreigner to build a kiln in Mashiko.
