Photograph Notes: The opencast mine was the deepest open pit coalmine in Europe, and used huge trucks and excavators. The bucket of this one could move several tons (I can't remember exactly) at a time. The pit operated from 1961 until 1985 and over its lifetime produced 34,500,000 tonnes of coal.
