Mumuye ancestor statue, called "Iagalagana", from Nigeria.
These statues generally measure between 30 & 160 cm in height.
First of all objects of prestige and power, they are kept in a hut specially reserved for this purpose, away from the housing huts, but on the territory of the family which owns them.
The more statues the family has, the greater its prestige will be.
The use of these statues is reserved for one of the members of the clan, known to possess magical powers. They will be used during divination practices or during ceremonies, to call for rain.
The characteristics common to almost all Mumuyé sculptures are its bent, arched legs with crenellated edges.
