Photograph Notes: A small field gun on display. Dunree Fort, was first an earthen battery (1798) then a Martello Tower. In 1813 the main battery was built and the guns upgraded in 1847. In 1889 a battery was established on top of Dunree Hill largely superseding the 1813 battery. The site is extensive with barracks, houses and other military buildings. The site remained in British hands as a 'Treaty Port' until 1938 and the fort ceased to be used after WWII. Now run as a museum, there are various parts listed.
