Amazingly vibrant feather hat by Urbi et Orbi Yokahama vintage original 1940s-50s pheasant feather hat. This Japanese custom milliner was known for its beautiful use of feathers in high priced toppers. This hat is covered in pheasant feathers in a beautiful artful bloom. One large feather is curled across the top circumference. Feathers are bright and iridescent! The work on this hat is exemplary.   One size. It is in amazing condition. It doesn't look as if it's ever been worn. Made in Japan.  (401)  

 

While researching this hat maker I found that this Japanese custom milliner was known for its beautiful use of feathers in high priced toppers. This label was used by the luxury hat maker from the 1940s through the 1960s. These hats were very much sought after in the United States after World War II even though Japan had been one of the Axis powers defeated by the Allied Forces. Urbi et Orbi of course does not in the least sound Japanese and the main reason is that it’s not…..it is Latin and means “to the city and to the world”!  According to the Hatatorium Hat Resource, a February 15, 1958 issue of New Yorker “Talk of the Town” article speaks of the Urbi et Orbi hat shop being located on Motomachi Street in Yokohama.
