Photograph Notes: An Anglo-Saxon monastery was founded here in about 680 by King Merewalh of Mercia, whose abbess daughter Milburge was hailed as a saint. Wenlock Priory is also known as St Milburga's Priory. Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury, re-founded Wenlock as a Cluniac house, bringing monks from La Charit-sur-Loire in central France, it is these ruins of this medieval priory which survive today. The monastery was dissolved on January 26th 1540. Today the priory is under the care of English Heritage.
