Thank you for purchasing a Waltons Garden Building. We want you to enjoy the use of your new garden building for many years to come. To give you the best chance of doing so, your garden building needs protecting at the start and maintaining during its life. This guide gives advice on what needs to be done and how regularly.

Shed Base

All long-lasting garden buildings will have been built on a solid and level base, either concrete, slabs, a wooden frame or ground level bearers. A flat, level base is essential.

If your garden building is not level and square when built, it will twist and warp with the natural movement of the wood. The first signs of this are when the doors or windows stop opening and closing properly. You may get issues with the roof and potential gaps in the panels which will allow water in, there may be flex in the floor and probably creaking. Check your base is level in both directions and adjust prior to the build ? it will be really difficult to adjust afterwards.

Pressure Treated Buildings

Full Instructions and Assembly Kit

Modern pressure treating techniques are environmentally friendly, using water-based treatments. However gloves should be worn when handling the parts/assembling the garden building.

Pressure treatment is different to externally applied preservatives and top coat treatments. Chemicals are impregnated into the fibres of the wood under pressure. This is done prior to assembling the building at the factory.

By fixing chemicals into the wood, pressure treating offers protection against insect attack, chemical attack and natural decay.

This treatment gives the wood a green colour. The building should also be treated with an aesthetic and waterproofing topcoat as described above. While the effectiveness of the treatment does not alter without a top coat, the colour does change over time, and that nice green shade will soon turn grey.

Dip Treated Buildings

Full Instructions and Assembly Kit

Our dip treated buildings, once installed will need treating as soon as possible and on an annual basis in order to receive the 10 year anti rot guarantee. The building also includes a 1 year manufacturers guarantee as standard.

Wood

Wood naturally changes over its lifetime, and with the seasons of the year. It expands when there is a high level of moisture, and contracts when it is dry. Your building is designed to cope with this natural movement, but it does need a little help.

The preservation of wood in the outdoors is of vital importance. Following these guidelines will help you protect your purchase, improve its appearance and ensure maximum longevity.
Without proper protection, insects, moisture, salt, sun, rain, snow and frost will have dramatic effects on the stability and appearance of your garden building.

By taking a few basic precautions you can prepare and protect your building from exposure, and prevent rot, mold, splitting, warping, discoloration and ultimately product failure.

Poor preparation and unprotected exposure to the elements leads to decay. When you install your garden building our advice is to install a proper roof drainage system such as guttering and a water butt and treat the wood with additional preservatives.

Preservation

Wood needs preserving. Trees have bark to protect their wood your garden building does not.

We recommend that all garden buildings are treated with a good quality preservative prior to applying any aesthetic top coat such as paint.

Preservative Treatment refers to the application of chemicals that prevent decay, deter insects, and prevent the growth of fungi and bacteria. Preservatives are usually spirit based..

If a preservative is not going to be applied, Water Based Treatment is the next most common method. These treatments prevent decay and, by repelling water, this method of treatment also discourages the growth of moulds and fungi that could jeopardise the structural integrity of the wood though water treatments do not generally prevent insect attack.

To apply a brush or spray preservative/treatment, follow the manufacturer's instructions

Your building is now ready for a top coat

Natural Staining: These stains are designed to enhance rather than overpower the natural beauty of the wood, with the pigments ranging from transparent to semi-coloured. YOu should expect to re-apply a natural finish every 1-2 years for the best, long-lasting results.

Painting: If you prefer a more modern look for your garden building, use paint. It not only lasts longer than the natural stain, but it will improve the aesthetics of your building because of its heavy pigment.

Although the manufacturer's instructions must always be followed, we expect that to obtain the best results, you should apply at least two coats of primer taking care to make certain the first coat has completely dried before applying the second.

The third and final coat is then a specially formulated paint in the colour(s) of your choice. Applied properly, a painted finish has rock-solid longevity lasting anywhere from 5 to 8 years.

Rain Protection and Drainage

Your garden building is supplied with roofing felt which must be correctly fitted. Any single skin roof covering must be checked at least annually for tears, splits, cracks and deterioration caused by weathering and bird droppings.

Failure of the roofing felt will result in leaks and increased dampness in your garden building which needs to be avoided.

While your garden building is rainproof when built, constant running water can cause problems, just like it would on brick walls. Properly installed guttering systems will help keep rain off the sides and help water run off. The downpipe should be installed direct water away from the building to a drain or area where it won't create pool.

Coastal Considerations

If you live in a coastal area, you do need to take extra precautions to maintain the wood. Not only do coastal regions tend to have higher concentrations of moisture in the air than inland areas, they also have to deal with salt in the air. Salt causes wood to soften and can feel almost fuzzy to the touch. This is a direct result of the salt eating away at the cellular structure of the wood leaving it seriously weakened.

Though not a major concern unless living within a few hundred yards of the water, if your garden building is going to be sited in a coastal area then check that any treatment applied offers protection against chemical attack, such as salt.

Glazing

The styrene windows are protected using a clear film which will need to be removed after you've installed the building.

All Waltons shed windows are designed to fit well, but over time and with the movement of wood, small gaps can appear. Help to prevent this by sealing your windows with a silicone sealant. You can do this either when you build your shed, or to an existing one.

Our buildings are supplied flat packed as DIY kits with full instructions, we don't offer an installation service.

All of our buildings are delivered unpainted but are dip treated in order to protect them during the manufacture and delivery process. The buildings are dressed for display, we don't supply any accessories or shelves featured within the product images.

Exact product dimensions are supplied on the listing as we do round off the main size of the building in order to make it easier for customers to find so please be sure to check the items specific measurements carefully.

All measurements refer to the exterior of the building which includes the roof overhang unless stated otherwise.

We also would recommend against arranging for a third party to install the building before it's been delivered and checked that all parts are present as we cannot be held liable for any third party costs.

Due to health and safety reasons this building isn't supplied with glass windows, we use styrene which is a safer alternative but if you wish to replace this with glass at a later date this can be easily done.
