Donald Rust is an American visual artist who was born in 1932 in Erie, Pennsylvania. He is acclaimed for his sensual vintage style pin-up girl paintings which are highly coveted by collectors of the genre.
Rust’s grandfather Emil Rust and other prominent artists such as Norman Rockwell, Bob Toombs, and Gil Elvgren (with whom Rust had an apprenticeship in the 1960s) all influenced his realistic style of painting. Elvgren was a well renowned and commercially successful pin-up artist whose works were reproduced for calendars as well as nose art for military aircraft during World War II.
Rust’s pin-up girls capture and pay homage to the glamorous and flirtatious spirit of the idealized female figures of the genre. Their sensuality and fun-loving expressions embody the vitality and playfulness of the “great American pin-up”. In addition to pin-up girls, Rust has painted a wide variety of subjects including still lifes, portraits, wildlife, seascapes, and illustrations.
In the span of a decades-long artistic career, Rust has produced over 17,000 paintings, some of which are in the permanent collections of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, and the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution. Additionally, 2,000 original works are registered by owners with the National Museum and Gallery Registration Association.
