Vintage Sports Illustrated Magazine – August 30, 1982 (Tom Cousineau)

This is a used copy of the Sports Illustrated Magazine, issued on August 30, 1982.

It has a photo of Tom Cousineau, linebacker for the Cleveland Browns, who left the Canadian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes to sign a huge contract with Cleveland in a move to help re-invigorate the Browns defense. To sign him the Browns had to provide the Buffalo Bills, who had the right of first refusal due to being the NFL team that originally drafted him, a whopping price of 3 future draft choices, one being a #1, and pay him $3.5 million, making him the highest paid linebacker in the NFL. In his first season with the Browns in 1982 they were among 8 teams that qualified for the playoffs during the strike shortened season, and became one of only 5 teams to ever qualify for the playoffs despite having a losing record. They finished with a 4-5 record and lost to the Oakland Raiders in a playoff game 27-10.

Cousineau was a consensus first-team All-American at Ohio State, breaking the school record with 211 tackles in a single season in 1978, an average of 17.5 a game. He also broke the school record for most tackles in a game with 29 against Penn State in 1978, and was the MVP of the 1977 Orange Bowl. He was selected with the first pick in the 1979 NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills, but was convinced by his agent to take a much larger salary offer by the Montreal Allouettes of the Canadian Football League. He played 9 years professionally for the CFL's Montreal Alouettes (3 years), the NFL's Cleveland Browns (4 years),  and San Francisco 49ers (2 years). He was named to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2016.

Many collectors of SI magazines like to frame just the cover for a sports memorabilia display on the wall of a man-cave, and restaurant and bar owners do the same to create a sports atmosphere for their businesses.
