Winged Bean Seeds
Heirloom, Non-GMO
Scientific Name: Psophocarpus tetragonolobus
Winged Bean, also known as Asparagus Pea, Winged Pea, Four Angled Bean, Manila Bean (Sigarilyas), Princess Bean, and Dragon Bean, is a versatile tropical plant with almost every part being edible. The beans are used as a vegetable, the leaves are cooked like spinach, the roots resemble potatoes, and the dried seeds are utilized for flour.
Cultivation Instructions:
- Soil Preparation: Begin by preparing fertile, well-drained soil in a warm, sunny location.
- Germination Tips: Winged Bean seeds can be challenging to germinate. For improved germination, pre-sprout seeds indoors by soaking them in water for 24 hours until swollen. Maintain a temperature of 77°F until sprouted. Scarify the seed coat for seeds that haven't swollen and re-soak. Plant when seeds sprout.
- Growing Conditions: Keep the soil consistently moist. Fertilize sparingly.
- Support and Training: Train the plant to grow on a vertical support as the large, vigorous vines can reach 9-12 feet.
- Harvesting: Harvest beans when they reach up to 3 inches in length.
