Photograph Notes: As the knoll is a prominent high ground surrounded by the (once marshy) Levels, it was clearly an important strategic position. The fort seems to be Iron Age (with a few Bronze Age finds amidst it) but there was significant Roman occupation after that as well as Anglo-Saxon. Quarrying in the nineteenth century has not helped with the preservation but the views remain spectacular.
