A fun whimsical nut bowl with the ever-present squirrel stashing his nuts.

The outside of the heavy metal bowl has been silver plated. The interior had a gold wash and still has remnants of the gilding. The mouth edge has a lined border. This pattern is repeated in the four knob feet. The base is flat. Based on the streamlined styling, I’d estimate that the bowl is from the 1920s or 1930s.

A manufacturer’s mark on the base center reads, “REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. APOLLO SILVER CO”. This encircles a fleur de lis. Under this circle are the words, “QUADRUPLEPLATE and the production number 1342.

MEASUREMENTS

8” (20.3 cm) long x 6 ½” (16.5 cm) diameter x 6” (15.2 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 3.8 oz (560 g)

CONDITION

Although much silver remains, there are silver losses and wear to the outside the bowl. Most of the silver losses are well distributed, except for a 1” wide spot on the lower half of one side (see photo).  Much of the gold wash on the interior is worn off; with about 40% remaining. There are two significant dents. One is near the mouth and one is midway on the body. There are also a few deep scratches. Otherwise there are no other dents, cracks, or breaks. The bowl rests flat on a surface.

Such a cute little squirrel. Every house needs a nut bowl!
