Photograph Notes: Also known as the Chapel of Our Lady of the Mount this unusual octagonal former chapel is in "The Walks" park in King's Lynn. This was a place of pilgrimage possibly having held a supposed relic of the Virgin Mary. Later it became a resting place for pilgrims on their way to the shrines at Little Walsingham. It was built in the reign of Richard III (1483-85) by Robert Curraunt. After many years of neglect and having sadly attracted graffiti and other vandalism, I am happy to report that in summer 2007 it underwent considerable refurbishment, and it is intended that it should reopen to the public in Spring 2008. [Edit 2013] The chapel is now open to the public from 2 June until 9 September on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 12 noon until 3pm. Entry is free but donations are accepted.
