Photograph Notes: Whitby is famous for Jet, a black fossil similar to coal, which is used in jewellery. The jet is believed to have formed from the remains of the tree Araucaria (similar to the modern monkey puzzle tree, Araucaria Aracuana), flattened under ground and subject to chemical changes to create a hard stone-like substance, which can be shaped and polished for jewellery. The photo was taken from inside The Whitby Tea Rooms across the street.
