Opera Glasses. Height 2-1/4 inches, width 3-3/4 inches.
With brass and mother-of-pearl eyepieces and trim.
Made in France by A.S. Aloe Company. St Louis and
Paris. c.1900-1910.
Blue enamel with silver foil accents. The two floral medallions are
framed with small jeweled faux “ruby” beads. With original leather case (worn), lined
with red silk.
Mark: On both MOP eyepieces and on silk inside case. Mark on
brass “Made in France”.
Condition : One eye lens missing, winding screw missing. Chip
to MOP eyepiece.
By the late 19th century opera glasses, intricately decorated and encrusted
with faux jewels were an essential fashion accessory
for wealthy theatre- goers.
The A. S. Aloe Company was founded in 1860 by
Albert S. Aloe in St. Louis, Missouri. Its industry was manufacturing and
distribution of optical, surveying, and medical products. The headquarters were
in St. Louis, Missouri.
