FROM "A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR":

Just mention the Hill Country of Texas, and a wistful faraway look comes into the eye;  those who are familiar with the lakes, rivers, hills and wildflowers of the heart of the state long for the opportunity to live in small towns like New Braunfels or others near to it.  The historical hamlet of Gruene especially seems to appeal to those who are familiar with it by virtue of being able to spend vacations or long weekends in the area, soaking up its German and Mexican heritage and indulging in a little toe-tapping in Gruene Hall or strolling the shops of Gruene.

In this book of recipes, some of which are mine but many of which have been contributed by family and friends, I've attempted to bring together the best of the old and new, in a particular effort to evoke the atmosphere of the Central Texas hill country which has been my home for many years.  The German recipes, so familiar to those whose heritage lies in that generation of brave immigrants who settled this country;  the recipes contributed by family and friends;  the tasty "new cuisine" foods which reflect our interest in low fat, healthy alternatives - all these combine, I hope, to present to the reader a collection of recipes that will become the source of good eating for friends and family.
