The 10,000 step challenge is a widely recognised way of improving and maintaining fitness and wellness as a key part of a healthy lifestyle. The UW-101NFC activity monitor from A&D Medical is a multi-function device which helps you to track your activity by displaying the number of steps, distance walked and calories burnt in the process. Simply carry the activity monitor with you wherever you go, carrying it in your bag or pocket – due to the inbuilt tri-axial accelerometer, the device will pick up your steps as you go about your daily business. Don’t be alarmed if it doesn’t show the first few steps – it will count your first ten steps when they are completed and keep counting from there. This feature exists so that it doesn’t pick up one-off movements which are not burning calories. By use of A&D’s own FREE Android app or Sony Dongle (product reference RC-S360S) along with the FREE Microsoft HealthVault software, you can see the long term (daily, weekly and monthly) trends in your personal fitness records. First ensure you have an NFC enabled smartphone (such as the Samsung Galaxy S3, Nexus S, Sony Xperia S and HTC One X), and then download the app FREE from the Android Playstore and follow the instructions. You will be asked for your personal information such as name, date of birth, gender and height. There is further good news if you are less technically proficient – there is no pairing, cable or other connection that needs setting up. The only time you will even need a password is when you create a FREE Microsoft HealthVault account to upload your data to your PC. You will then be free to review your data on either the A&D app or on the HealthVault website. Rest assured – none of the information you upload or enter into the app or elsewhere can be used by anyone except for you and those people you choose to share it with. HealthVault is Microsoft’s personal health record. HealthVault allows consumers to easily and securely store an unlimited range of personal healthcare data, either to refer to later, to use with other apps and devices, to share with their medical professionals, or to share more widely– using carefully controllable permissions - with family and friends. For example, it can make it easier to lose weight when you go on a programme with a group of other people. By linking the A&D weighing scales with HealthVault, you are empowered to share and compare your weight loss performance with your peers. It means goals can be ‘socialised’ and members of groups can offer each other mutual encouragement. You can also use it to store your family’s health information and choose to share it with your GP and other healthcare providers. Set your personal information (time, stride length and weight) as per the instruction manual, put the activity monitor in your bag or pocket and it will count your steps as you go about your daily business. Upload steps, distance walked and calories burnt in the process to your NFC enabled Android Smartphone by holding the back of the activity monitor to the back of the smartphone. The data will be transmitted and you can then view the data into the app, available on Playstore.
