Light meters of the brand Leningrad were produced at the Leningrad plant "Vibrator". Yes, that's what it was called.

Little has been written about the history of these devices.

Expos-Len-1-aI know that the first exposure meter at the enterprise was developed in 1954 and was called "Leningrad" - without a numerical index.

Interestingly, a device completely similar in design and design was also produced in parallel at the Moscow Exposure Metering Instruments Plant (ZEP) and was called "Moscow".

This is quite logical. The device, I'm not afraid of the word, was revolutionary for that time, the need for it among amateur photographers is huge. The capacity of one enterprise would simply not be enough to meet the demand. And the risks of production disruptions had to be diversified.

The hero of today's review - Leningrad-2 is a development of the previous model. From what year they began to produce it is unknown to me, but my copy is dated 1962.

Let's take a closer look at this exposure meter.

Leningrad-2 is a little more compact than the 8th model we considered earlier. The device was delivered with a high-quality case with a slick and rather stylish shape.
The layout of the exposure meter is classic. At the front end there is a transparent window, behind which there is a movable selenium photocell.

On the top side there is a scale with arrows on the back, and a round calculator in the central part.

All other sides are free from controls.

Below there is a table of correspondence of film sensitivity according to 3 systems - GOST, ASA and DIN. A necessary thing, because on the calculator, the sensitivity is set only in GOSTs.

And, by the way, here the GOST scale is still seriously different from ASA.

How to use the exposure meter?

Leningrad allows you to measure exposure in two ways:

— measurement of reflected light;

— measurement of incident light.

In the first case, the device must be directed to the subject from the place of the photographer. In the second, on the contrary, from the subject to the place where the photographer will be.

When measuring reflected light, the photocell must be pushed deep into the device.

Incident light can be measured in two modes.

The first (main) - the photocell is retracted, and matte white glass is put on the front panel.

The second (if the arrow does not deviate) - the photocell is extended without the white glass.

The photocell moves with a massive curly leash at the back of the calculator. The leash forms a frame inside which the sensitivity scale is visible.

The position of the leash at 6 o'clock corresponds to the retracted photocell. To extend the element, you need to turn the leash clockwise. In the position at half past eight, it will lock.

Next, hooking a small, protruding round leash on the right, set the sensitivity and look at the scale with arrows.

Actually, there is no scale there. - only an open field on which two arrows walk.

The first, thin one, occupies a position on the scale depending on the brightness of the light. The second one is thicker, and with a ring on the ring, it moves when the outer ring of the calculator rotates.

It is necessary to align the hole of the ring with a thin arrow.

When the thin arrow is "caught", the exposure calculation is ready.

Excerpts are printed on the front of the calculator on an external disk. And a little closer to the center, on the inner disk - diaphragms. Now shutter speeds and apertures are lined up opposite each other and form exposure pairs.

We choose the most suitable one, and transfer it to the camera.

Here's something else that's interesting. In addition to the exposure pair, Leningrad-2 also made it possible to determine the exposure number. It is in the window on the left and is indicated by a white triangular marker.

The exposure value is a measure of the level of light. Some cameras of those times were able to operate with such numbers.
