.

Life and career[edit]

Davis was born on January 19, 1951, in Berkeley, California. She was married at age 15 and had two children, was divorced, and had her mom pass away by the time she was 19. It was at this time Davis turned to music as a career which found her moving the family to Los Angeles.

Davis's music career started in 1971 when she was one of the founding members of the Warfield Foxes. This group slowly morphed into The Motels. After changing band members in 1978, Davis reformed the group into a 1980s new wave band that created five albums produced by Capitol Records. In 1987 Davis made her first solo album, Policy, and then partially retired from producing music. In the 1990s, Davis was being asked for music for several films, including Madhouse and Miracle Beach and actually had a small part in the movie Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

By the late 1990s Davis was again writing songs regularly, and then created a new incarnation of The Motels. She made her first solo album in 17 years entitled So The Story Goes and in 2005 joined Teatro ZinZanni for a two-month run in Seattle. She wrote music and helped create an album for this show. Two albums with The Motels and another solo album later, and in 2010 Davis created her first album for children entitled Red Frog Presents 16 Songs For Parents and Children

Davis continues to tour and make albums with The Motels, the most current being a 2018 release, The Last Few Beautiful Days. She lives in Portland surrounded by her many pets.

Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Policy" was the first solo album by Martha Davis, the lead singer in the Motels. Like many of the Motels' moody hits, most of the songs on "Policy" have a melancholic feel. Standing in contrast, however, is the hopeful and climactic "My Promise."

Martha Davis’ “Policy”, released in 1987, was the long awaited solo debut album by the lead singer of The Motels. Having found success with the Motels, Davis decided to branch out on her own and expectations were high for “Policy”. With Richie Zito handling production duties, and a bevy of guest vocalists, song writers and the best musicians in the business being involved in the project, “Policy” seemed destined for multi platinum greatness but that was not to be. As a matter of fact, “Policy” was a major industry flop and resulted in Davis not releasing another solo project for many years.

However, the chart results of “Policy” in no way reflect the actual music that is on the album. The album itself is outstanding, the songs are deep, melancholy and as is usually the case with all Martha Davis compositions, moody and emotional. Davis’ voice is as passionate and as emotional as ever. Her yearning is beautifully expressed in the Dianne Warren penned album opener “Tell It To The Moon”, a classic example of the hit that wasn’t. Despite shooting a video for “Tell It To The Moon”, there was zero promotion by Capitol for the song. “Don’t Tell Me The Time”, the lead off single off the album, barely scratched the Top 100. A stand out haunting track on “Policy” is “Heaven Outside My Door”, which features an all star cast of back up vocalists who assist Davis on a beautiful song, which would have easily found a home on Pop and Adult Contemporary stations back in 1987. “Just Like You” is just as beautiful with Davis’ voice being a true instrument of force and beauty. “Rebecca”, a strikingly dark piece about abuse, hits hard. “What Money Might Buy” is also a powerful rocker about the abuses the privileged are allowed. “Don’t Ask Outloud” is a midtempo rocker with jazzy over tones that also deserved airplay on several formats. “Hardest Part Of A Broken Heart” is another beautiful mid tempo track demonstrating Davis’ incredible talent as a not only a singer but also a songwriter and lyricist. “Lust” would have to be the most strange song on “Policy” and is very reminiscent of The Motels early artsy years. Album closer “My Promise” ends the album on a dreamy positive note. And Culture Factory gives us a wonderful surprise in the shape of a previously unreleased Bonus track in “Bridge Of Sighs”, recorded for “Policy” but for some inexplicable reason was left off the album. A beautiful song that makes for a great addition to this solid album.

Why was “Policy” such a failure when there are so many killer songs on it that could have and should have become radio hits? Martha Davis is a very talented singer, songwriter and poet. She is also a striking presence. A beautiful woman whose presence helped transform MTV in the early 80’s. 1987 was a year when women played a strong role in the music industry with Heart, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Tina Turner, Eurythmics and The Bangles all scoring multi platinum albums and Top 10 Singles. There is no easy answer but it appears that Capital did not have a lot of faith in “Policy” and simply failed to promote the album. A shame since had “Policy” been given the right promotional push, it would have easily been the multi platinum hit that it deserved to be.
