1938 N.Y. TIMES FILM REVIEW

As time and Paramount goes on our national history becomes in creasingly simplified. Behind each great event—be it the War of 1812, the Pony Express, the creation of Standard Oil—lurks a dazzling in génue and a square-jawed lead of man. "The Texans," which accompanied Gene Krupa's band into the Paramount yesterday, adds still another chapter: Texans during the Civil War reconstruction, the opening of the Chisholm Trail, the transcontinental railroad, the formation of the Ku Klux Klan—all neatly abridged to suit the modest co-starring dimension's of the very ingennous Joan Bennett, the very square-jawed Randolph Scott. It's not the sort of picture we dare take seriously, much as we would like to for the glory of the Lone Star State and Adolph Zukor. The retically it's "epic," that convenient Hollywood word for any Class???. A picture filmed on location, be practically it is just another romance with unjustified pretensions to importance. The material might have been there, but a commonplace cast, bad direction and a fairly silly script have stripped it of dignity, reduced it to the mildly entertaining level of a large-scale horse opera. The scene, as noted before, is Texas after the Civil War when the carpet-baggers have begun their land-grabbing raids, their confiscatory taxation program, their ruthless persecution of all Confederate sympathizers. When they levy a tax of a dollar a head on all cattle, Mr. Scott rides to Miss Bennett's rescue with the plan to smuggle every white-faced steer on the Boca Grande ranch across the Mexican border and thence north to the Kansas terminus of the railroad. It is an overland trek of 1,500 miles, through Indian country, and with the wretched carpet-baggers in pursuit.James Hogan, who directed it, makes the usual capital of stampeding steers, of dust storms, blizzards, Indian raids, and the inevitable charge of the blue-coated cavalry. He has not the same success with such concomitant business as the grudging love story, his comic relief and, ultimately, with the sequence which establishes Mr. Scott's responsibility for the continuation of the railroad. (It seems the line would have been discontinued if his 10,000 head of cattle hadn't arrived just when they did.)Mr. Scott stomps through his part, Miss Bennett braves fire, blizzard, flood and mud without mussing a finger-wave, and May Robson and Walter Brennan—the latter especially—do their troupers' best to invest their character roles with a degree of honesty and color. Our feeling is that Paramount muffed an opportunity, even though it has achieved a moderately entertaining show.

LYRICS

“There's silver on the sage tonight Sprinkled by the Moon above So lie down dawgies and let me dream Of the one gal I love There's silver on the sage tonight We've been on the trail all day So lie down doggies and you dream too Of a range far away Of a range waitin' for you Where the streams never go dry And the grass sparkles with dewdrops In the meadows of the sweet by and by There's silver on the sage tonight Sprinkled by the Moon above So lie down dawgies and let me dream Of the one I love Of the gal I love”
