DESCRIPTION:
This is a nice original airplane portrait oil painting artwork of what looks to be a military plane (see photos). The item is an original work of art oil painting (see photos). The painting is painted on canvas (see photos). The painting is framed in a painted wooden picture frame (see photos). The painting is signed by the artist: Gordon Leeke (see photos). The painting is American US in origin (see photos and decide the age, the origin and the maker). The painting portion without the picture frame in total measures about 2 feet high and it is about 1 foot 6 inches wide. The painting framed measures about 2 feet 5+ inches high and 1 foot 11+ inches wide. The item is sold in as found estate condition. The picture frame shows some scuffs, some discoloration to the cloth liner, some paint finish losses and wear (see photos). The painting has some wear (see photos and / or written description for the condition of this item). This item would be a nice item to add to your collection.

I was told the painting depictsan Avro Lancaster B.1 (FE) in the markings of 207 Squadron, Royal Air Force. Its white fuselage and black underside was the color scheme used by Tiger Force, formed from RAF units with the intention of carrying out missions against Japan from the island of Okinawa. The white finish was meant to reflect sunlight and keep the inside of the aircraft cool. The FE (‘Far East’) version also had larger fuel tanks, modified engines and revised navigation, radio and radar equipment. Before the aircraft could be deployed to the Pacific, the US had ended the war by dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Tiger Force was stood down before being disbanded in October 1945. A number of Lancasters, including the one in the painting, retained their black-and-white finish even once the war had ended.
