The 1st Bn, Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) arrived in South Vietnam in 1965 and deployed with US Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade at Bien Hoa. In September1965, the 161st IRF (Independent Recon Flight) was formed in Australia and deployed to support the RAR Aircraft which consisted of 2 x Sioux LOH and 2 x Cessna 180s.  Their radio callsign "Possums" was to become their nickname for the duration. Early-1971 the Sioux Loach's were replaced by Bell OH-58 Kiowas. This unit lost 12 aircraft and 3 pilots during their deployment to Vietnam.
