Germination Instructions
Germinating olive seeds takes a bit of a knack ,but once you learn it, it is easy and I can process 60+ seeds in 30 minutes. Olive seeds (pits) have a very hard outer shell which needs to be "nicked" to allow moisture to penetrate and allow germination. Have a look at all the videos online - easier than explaining here.
However, my technique is:
- Soak the seeds in water for a day or so
- W a small pair of wire cutters to carefully snip off the THIN end of the seed taking care not to damage the embryo inside
- Plant them up in a trays of compost and place on window sill or in greenhouse/porch.
- Patience is required and germination can be erratic but I get 75% germination rate which I am more than happy with.
