"Íslandsklukkan" is Halldór Laxness's 7th novel, originally published in in three parts: Íslandsklukkan (1943), Hið ljósa man (1944) og Eldur í Kaupinhafn (1946). This book, along with several other major novels, helped Laxness win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1955.

Halldór Laxness (1902 – 1998) was extraordinarily prolific and versatile as a writer. During his long career he published sixty books representing every genre— novels and short stories, poetry and essays, plays and newspaper articles, travelogues and autobiographical sketches, novellas and memoirs. Halldór Laxness has won more fame than any other Icelandic author since Snorri Sturluson and the nameless authors of the Icelandic sagas. His works have been translated into more than forty languages and published in countries around the globe. For Icelanders, Halldór Laxness is a national icon.

"Íslandsklukkan" is grim, sometimes uproarious, and always captivating novel that is at once an updating of the traditional Icelandic saga and a caustic social satire. At the close of the 17th century, Iceland is an oppressed Danish colony, suffering from extreme poverty, famine, and plague. A farmer and accused cord-thief named Jon Hreggvidsson makes an improper joke about the Danish king and soon after finds himself a fugitive charged with the murder of the king’s hangman.

In the years that follow, the hapless but resilient rogue Jon Hreggvidsson becomes a pawn entangled in political and personal conflicts playing out on a far grander scale. Chief among these is the star-crossed love affair between Snaefridur, known as “Iceland’s Sun,” a beautiful, headstrong young noblewoman, and Arnas Arnaeus, the king’s antiquarian, an aristocrat whose worldly manner conceals a fierce devotion to his downtrodden countrymen. As their personal struggle plays itself out on an international stage, Iceland’s Bell creates a Dickensian canvas of heroism and venality, violence and tragedy, charged with narrative enchantment on every page.

About me

My name is Árni and I live in Iceland. I'm not a professional trader or seller - I'm scientist and teacher, but it so happened that I sell here the Icelandic Golden Root, Angelica archangelica, Arctic Thyme, Icelandic books, Bibles, etc. Why? Because I am interested in comparative linguistics and for many years I have been collecting and studying bible texts in many languages. I collect Bibles in different world languages and I spend a lot of money on the purchase of these. So I decided to sell the excess items in eBay to get some money for buying a new books and Bibles.

You should definitely visit my little eBay-store if you are interested in Icelandic medicinal plants growing in harsh arctic nature, surounded by the mountains, glaciers and volcanoes, which can significantly enhance your health. I can also provide different Icelandic books like Bibles, dictionaries, textbooks and etc., that can enrich your multilingual library.
