His missions included flying insertions for MACV-SOG into Laos and supporting ARVN troops in Lam Son 719, a disastrous attempt to assault and cut the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The largest airmobile campaign of the war, the operation marked the first time that the helicopter was used in mid-intensity combat. More than 100 helicopters were lost and more than 600 aircraft sustained combat damage. Using in-country notes and letters sent home, the author details his experiences.
