Common ground is ok. You can use this meter to measure it's own supplying voltage without causing a feedback problem.

Do not rely on the cable color for connection as it changes sometimes. Follow the label on the meter only.

*If you want to use it in a car, boar, or bike, you need to use a 5V regulator to step down 12V to 5V to power this meter.
