MAGNIFICENTLY OLD BENIN CARVED OBA HEAD

Presenting an exquisite old hand carved ebony wood Oba head crafted by the Edo people from the Benin region of Nigeria.

This exceptional example depicts an Edo chief or Oba from Benin. This masterfully hand crafted piece has been exceptionally well executed with exquisite attention to detail. The Oba's smooth polished face is beautifully contrasted by the intricately detailed textured headdress creating a pleasing freestanding form which is a delight to behold.

This piece has been hand carved from one solid piece of dense, dark exotic timber which is believed to be ebony. The timber has developed a lovely mellow patina that only time can bring.

SIZE: This stunning piece stands approx 24.5cms tall, measures 16.5cms in width and 13.5cms in depth.

WEIGHT: This solid piece weighs just a speck over 3.4kgs unpackaged.

CONDITION: This stunning example is presented in good condition with appealing signs of age which rather enhance the charm and character of this authentically antique piece. There is a crack with some surrounding some softness to the timber which appears to have had an old repair to the right hand side of head. There are three small drilled holes to the top, an addition three to the front, one to the rear and one to each side of the headdress in which additional pieces may have been attached. This piece displays a pleasing amount of age and presents wonderfully.
