Details: This auction is for the gorgeous antique sterling silver jewellery box, made in Birmingham, England in 1921. The stunning large jewellery box features classic oval shape and stands of four legs. The lid is adorned with a monogram of beautiful calligraphy. The inside is lined with original green velvet on the base and green silk on the lid.

 

A little bit of history: The jewelry box had been sold in Winnipeg, Canada in the famous Dingwall family owned store, that specialized exclusively in high end luxury items and jewelry. Donald Ross Dingwall emigrated to Canada in the late 1870s from his native Scotland and opened the store in Winnipeg in the early 1880s. Dingwall Jewellers of Winnipeg were later bought out by Birks.

The box is marked on the bottom DINGWALL MADE IN ENGLAND (with additional letter D on opposite side) and has a typical set of British hallmarks as following:

Anchor-City mark, identifying the Assay Office to be in Birmingham, England   

         Lion- Silver Standard Mark for STERLING. 925

         W- Birmingham date letter for 1921

         The lid is hallmarked with “Lion” “W”.

The sterling silver jewelry box is as seen in the photos.

Measurements: The box measures approx. 2” tall and 4.5” x 2.7”.

 

Condition: The antique sterling silver jewelry box is in very good condition. The sterling silver part of the box looks good with minimal signs of age. The original velvet lining shows signs of age, please see the photos. The velvet lining can be replaced if desired. The bottom of the box is made of what appears to be leatherin, looks good with some signs of age (can also be replaced if desired). The lid has monogram of beautiful calligraphy.

We didn’t polish the silver and let the new owner to decide if polishing is necessary.
