French Art Deco Pottery: Leon Pointu, St. Amand en Puisaye, Vase, Midnight Blue

Léon Pointu (1879-1942) was born in Fontainbleu, where his father, Jean Pointu, was a well-established ceramicist.
After completing his studies and military service, Léon joined his father in St. Amand en Puisaye, which was one of
the most important 20th century ceramic production centers. There he followed an apprenticeship with his father, who
greatly influenced his style. His earliest works carried the signature "Max", after which he adopted the signature "Pointu Fils"
(Pointu Son) to distinguish his work from his father's. His later production was signed "L. Pointu." His works were mostly
hand turned on the wheel, but he also experimented with molded pieces, especially for commercial production of tea, coffee and
tobacco sets. His works were characterized by simple lines on large forms, distinguishing himself from the Japonisme
favored by other artists in the Ecole des Carriès. Pointu prepared his own glaze recipes, using raw materials purchased
from the well-known supplier L'Hospied à Golf Juan. Over time, he experimented with strongly contrasting glazes in
brighter colors. He publicly exhibited his work beginning after the first World War and organized a retrospective exhibition of
his father's work in 1928. After his death in 1942, his workshop was taken over by his wife Marie Bonnelie, assisted by
their children Geneviève and Michel. Production ceased in 1947, after which his son Michel established a larger business
on the same site,

This robust vase, with a beautiful dark midnight blue glaze, is an outstanding example of early circa 1920s stoneware production by Léon Pointu, son of Jean Pointu, in St. Amand en Puisaye, France.  The dimensions of the piece are approximately 6.5 inches high, 5.5 inches wide at its widest point, and 1.75 inches across the mouth. The piece is well-marked, carrying the hand-incised script Pointu Fils (Pointu Son) signature. The piece is in excellent original condition, with the only flaw observable being one small glaze pinhole (captured in photos). Please see photos for fuller details on condition. Pieces of this size and with monochromatic glazes and the uncommon "Pointu Fils" signature are not easily found in the marketplace for French Art Deco stoneware.
