DESCRIPTION:

HEARTBREAKER -    Beautiful light-pink trumpets that open very wide and fade to snow white on the second day.   This is a very desirable hybrid to add to a collection.   The scapes are tall and do not flop over like some crinum and it has a VERY extended blooming season.  In zone 10, we expect it would bloom every month of the year without winter freezes like we get.  Only a handful of specialized crinum collectors have this, because it is being offered for sale to the public for the first time in 2018.   This would be considered a large-size plant.  The flowers open sequentially, and it is a very heavy bloomer.  It will forms offset bulbs, but no seed, regularly when mature.  We have observed up to 12 flowers on 38" tall scapes, and the bulbs grow to over 4" in diameter.   We have recorded blooms in every month except February, November and December.  These do very well here in zone 9.

We grow over 1000 different crinum, including about 350 of our own hybrids.

BACKGROUND:

HEARTBREAKER (bulbispermum Wide Open White 'WOW' x Emma Jones)  A hybrid created and named by a fellow collector friend.  We also sell sell 'WOW'.   It opens white and turns pink on the second day.  It was crossed with pollen from the very tall, light pink 'Emma Jones' which we also sell, a very rare hybrid of 'Cecil Houdyshel' and 'Peachblow'.  Emma Jones was found by Fred Jones and was supposedly passed to Dr. Thad Howard for distribution in the 1950's.  Cecil Houdyshel is a bulbispermum and moorei cross.  Peachblow is a hybrid that naturally occurred in the garden of Theodore L. Mead of Oviedo, FL in the early 1900's.  He had imported about 100 different crinum from India, and found this growing in his garden many years later.  Fortunately this Heartbreaker cross kept the best traits of both parents and has a complex DNA from at least 3 or more crinum species.  These types of complexities can create highly variable seedlings.  There were two seeds from this cross, but we are not marketing the other plant.  We received our original bulb from this collector and have been growing it since 2007.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS:

Bulbispermum are the most cold hardy of all crinum and should do just fine outside down to about zone 6, if planted deep enough, so we expect that this cross will also be very cold hardy.  They have been know to survive in even colder zones, but we would not recommend that.  It does great here in northeast Florida, zone 9, but we do not think it would survive outside below zone 5 or 6.  This is a very hardy and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care.  It tolerates a wide range of soils (but prefers rich soil).  In zone 5 or below we would recommend planting it in a pot and protecting it from freezing in the winter.  You can just let the pot go dry and start watering again in the spring after it is placed outside again.  Bulbs can survive nicely out of the ground for extended periods if allowed to dry.  They prefer full sun, but partial shade is OK.  They will also make excellent, container plants.

DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID:

You are bidding on a small-size bulb, at least 3 years old and about  1 - 2" in diameter which should bloom within 2 years.  They don't like being disturbed, so it could take one year to "settle in."  Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November.  In the winter months the leaves may be absent.

WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom.

Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old)

Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset)
