This
large, beautiful, handmade jug is 14-inches height by 9.5-inches diameter on a
10-inch base diameter. It has a study applied strap handle and the jug weighs a
full sixteen pounds, with much of the weight in its base to keep it upright and
steady during transport. It is a commercial-size jug and would have been used
to transport whiskey, or other liquid products, to the wider market in the
northeastern states. It was made in the early to mid-1900s, probably in Georgia
but could be from North or South Carolina. This bold, impressive, utilitarian
jug has a gorgeous, shiny alkaline glaze with a deep brown, almost black, glaze
poured over part of the jug’s rich, lighter brown base color. The clay is heavy
in iron, producing its red color. The capacity mark “4” is impressed on the
shoulder.
This outstanding jug is a beautiful example of early southern, utilitarian stoneware and this it is first time listed for sale and could be a terrific addition to a collection or exceptional, eye-catching, standalone piece!
