Photograph Notes: The Martello Tower, converted to a house, is a relic of the Napoleonic wars, but the tiny and remote village of Shingle Street has a far more interesting place in the history of World War Two. Officially it did not happen, but there is a lot of evidence that the Germans attempted an invasion here in 1940, and were stopped mainly by a system that released petrol and ignited it a few yards out to sea. One of the sites documenting the supposed events is this one http://www.shinglestreet1940.co.uk/
