Photograph Notes: Doug Florence prussiks out of Cow Pot entrance pitch. In this early era of Single Rope Technique (as opposed to flexible ladders), cavers used bits of old carpet to protect the rope from abrasion at pitch heads, wore wetsuits and building-site type helmets with electric lights. Cow Pot leads into Lancaster Hole and the Easegill Caverns, one of Britain's most extensive cave systems, but on this trip we had failed to find the rather obscure way on to the second pitch and later walked across the fell to do a descent of Lancaster Hole itself.
