Photograph Notes: It's slightly unusual to see these interesting creatures out in the open like this since they normally prefer to remain under cover. Bristletails, which belong to the order Thysanura, are ancient wingless insects which have been around for 300 million years. Their name derives from the Greek meaning fringed tail: these are 3-tailed variety. They feed on decaying organic material and despite measuring only a couple of centimetres can live for up to 7 years. Although they are so tiny and primitive, bristletails have a mating ritual that involves the male dancing around near a female and leaving a spermatophore on a silk thread. The female then picks this up between the valves of her ovipositor. The young emerge fully-formed from the eggs without a larval stage. There are a large number of varieties worldwide, the household silverfish being one.
