This offering is for a fantastic antique very early 19th century folk art carved American coconut flask or canteen. The front of the flask features a design of a Federal style spread winged American Eagle with a banner in his beak that reads "PLURIBUS UNUM" (note the lack of the E) beneath an arch of 15 stars. Below the image is a date of 1775. The next image is of a full figure Native American Indian holding a bow and arrow. He bears a very strong resemblance to the Massasoit Indian figures used on early 19th century weathervanes. Last but not at all least is an image of the trumpeting angle FAME with a date of 1800 below the carved figure. The flask was quite likely carved by an American sailor to pass idle hours, most likely as a gift for someone at home. The flask measures app. 5.75" long, one end is carved with a dog type figure similar to a bugbear and an opening for use as a flask. There is a tight crack that extends from the lip opening down app. 2" ending right at the rib and beading. There are also a couple of other short very tight surface cracks that would have occurred in the making. The flask has a wonderful deep even patina and an untouched surface that just begs you to pick it up. The buyer will pay a fixed amount of $ 15.00 for Standard Mail and we will include delivery confirmation, tracking, at no additional cost.
