War Memorial Campanile, Wellington NZ, Etching, M Matthews Pencil Signed 9/50.

In brownish ink on sandy coloured parchment/velin paper that bears watermark of a London paper maker somewhat illegible and the word “ parchment” clearly, also other marks and letters to be deciphered. Papier velin is sometimes preferred by etchers purportedly for taking extra fine etched lines. M Matthews, probably 1889-1948, exact records seem to vary. Even his Christian name seems to be unknown even though his etched work and landscape drawings are held by New Zealand museum collections and Yale University in USA. An intriguing artist, he was born near Oxford and lived in Canada as a small child, came to New Zealand in 1900. Whilst being completely self taught he apparently opened a commercial art studio in Auckland ( date unknown) moving to Wellington in 1930, where he took up etching and lithography. This particular example is clearly highly accomplished with stylish figures in 1930s costume, a vintage motor car showing the National War Memorial which was dedicated and opened April 25, 1932 Anzac Day

Famous Art Deco style building. Phenomenal detail and ultra fine work, skilled use of plate tone, wiping, and burr. An interesting and probably quite rare historical piece probably done in or around 1932.

No holes, tears, damage except for a slight undetermined mark top left ( refer to photos) scarcely discernible and not particularly detracting from the image. One very slight crinkle to mid right in the sky.

Paper velin is very hard to keep 100% flat without drum stretching or laying down.

Presented in a fresh, bespoke, textured off white hinged conservation book mount. Print attachments with archival standard water soluble Japanese mulberry paper hinging tape. Outside size of mount measures 10.5 x 13.375 inches
