Photograph Notes: Historical dress in evidence during the International Clan Gathering Parade of 2009. In marked contrast to the impeccable restraint shown by the Highlanders who occupied the town in 1745 (Lord George Murray had several shot on Leith Links for plundering instead of behaving like liberators), the besieged Castle garrison took its spite out on Jacobite sympathisers once the Prince's army had marched off to England. A female brewer wrote: "The Prince went from the Abby [i.e. Palace of Holyrood] on Thursday the 3st Octor and Friday the first of Novemr the whole of the Highland Army was gone from this place, and on Saturday the Castle Soldiers was sent down on the Town, and on the collour of searching for Arms they have done great damage and plunder. They have detroy'd the appartment the Prince was in, tore down the silk bed he lay in, broke and carried off all the fine gilded Glasses, Cabinets and everything else. They have done the same to the Duke of Perth's Lodging, its entirely ruined. They have visited the Lady Lochyel and used her in the rudest manner calling her Bitch and Whore, and had the impudence to spit in her face. They have given the same treatment to poor Mrs. Taylor and carryed off most of her goods, she has left her house and gone to stay with her friends. Mrs. Mathieson, in the [Nether]Bow is quite ruined. They have taken 70 pounds sterling value of Goods with 8 Guineas in Gold and 14 Shilings money, and beat herself in a severe manner, and much more damage they have done which would be too tedious for me to write. They also went to the Infirmary and beat the poor Highlanders, twist about their Arms and Legs that was set after being broke at the late Battle [of Prestonpans], tore open their wounds so that their shreiks was heard never so far. Your friend Mr. Bisset hearing and seeing all their doings, brought the Pistolls back to me, for he said he could not protect them, and told they had been at his Father's house in Leith and broke open Chests and took away a very good Gun and Sword. However there at last came a party to my house, and women along with them, and light Candles in their hand. So they have tak'n the Pistols with the Sadle, but the Cutlass is to the for, being under Botles of beer. So at the expense of my Beer which they drank so greedily, the Cutlass is safe. They never called for any thing to drink it in but set the Bottles to their heads, and all the thanks I got for it was that I was a Dam'd Jacobite Bitch, because I refused to send for Brandy to give them to drink. All our neighbours had the same fate. There was a sad uproar in our wynd." -- letter to Mrs. Cumming at Montrose, 11th November 1745
