Description: This engraved map originates from: 'Veteres arcus augustorum triumphis insignes ex reliquis quae Romae supersunt cum imaginibus triumphalibus antiquis nummis notisque.'.,by G. P. Bellori, published in Rome by J. J. de Rubeis, 1690. This work, with 48 engravings depicts famous Roman arches and their reliefs and architectural details. The arches inlude the 2 Septimus Severus arches as well as the Constantine, Titus, Gallienus and Portuguese arches.
Artists and Engravers: Author: Giovanni Pietro Bellori (1613 - 1696). Artist: Pietro Santi Bartoli (1635 - 1700). Bellori is the most important antiquarian and art theorist of Baroque Rome served as Commissario dell’Antichita to Pope Clement X (1670-76). He formed an important collection of coins and medals, as well as major paintings by Titian, Tintoretto and Annibale Caracci.

Subject: Plate 14: 'Tabula E.' This large plate depicts frieze carvings from the arches of Constantine and Septimus Severus in Rome, Italy. The Roman Emperor Lucius Septimus Severus (193-211 AD), the so-called 'African Emperor'. This composite engraving shows differing versions of harvest offerings. The supposed gratitude of Rome's subjected peoples for "Pax Romana" is depicted as worship of the Goddess 'Provincia'. In the bottom part of this engraving examples of coins from the different emperors' reigns are shown, flanked by reliefs of the 4 seasons: winter, summer, spring and autumn. Copy of title page included.
Condition: Excellent. General age related toning and occasional light staining / foxing. Paper edges with a few tiny tears. Original middle fold as issued. Rear blank. Please study scan.
