Sorrel roots contain up to 4% of anthraquinone derivatives, which contain chrysophanic acid (chrysophanol), frangula-emodin and aloe-emodin, which, due to their irritating effect on the intestinal walls, enhance overstalsis and cause a laxative effect. In addition, 8-12% of tannins were found in the roots, which have the opposite effect to anthraquinones, that is, astringent and fixing. Hence, it would seem, the contradiction in the recommendations.

But the great rule of the ancients works here – the dose determines everything. Interestingly, preparations of sorrel roots have a diametrically opposite effect depending on the dose: in small doses - fixing, and in large doses - laxative. In addition, saponins, caffeic acid, anthocyanins (up to 5%) and flavonoids neposin and neposide, which are naphthalene derivatives, have been isolated from the roots. Anthraquinones and tannins were found in the fruits, and flavonoids hyperoside and rutin with P vitamin activity, as well as up to 700 mg% ascorbic acid, vitamin K and carotenoids were found in the leaves.

All organs of the plant contain calcium oxalate, and in the roots its amount can reach 9%. Microelement analysis revealed almost the entire periodic table. In the roots, the plant accumulates iron, selenium, barium and strontium. However, this is not only a virtue, but also a disadvantage. Plants growing on polluted soils can "gain" undesirable elements in off-scale quantities. Therefore, pay attention to the ecology of the places where you dig up raw materials.

Contraindications

Long-term use of sorrel, as well as other plants containing anthroquinones, is undesirable. It is also contraindicated in kidney diseases, pulmonary tuberculosis, salt metabolism disorders (metabolic arthritis). As a laxative, it is not recommended to use it for inflammation in the intestines. In small doses, when they seek to get an astringent effect, this is not a contraindication.
